The path of a projectile is called the trajectory and follows a parabolic path. We will almost always ignore the effects of air resistance at our level of study :) making the math much less complicated. Motion in X is independent of motion in Y, sharing only the TIME of the flight. The horizontal velocity in X is CONSTANT! The vertical velocity in Y changes over time.

*The acceleration vector always points straight down and has the value of "g" 9.8 m/s^2 *

Initial Velocity Components in X and Y


Very often initial velocities need to be broken into their X and Y components.
